Underdog Jays Defeat Mighty Yankees

New York Yankees: 4
Toronto Blue Jays: 5

WP: Roger Clemens
LP: Jeff Nelson
Date Played: 4/12/2005

The Toronto Blue Jays pulled off a huge upset today in Yankee stadium, defeating a Yankees team that featured Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle.

MVP: Vernon Wells

"Baseball is a lot like democracy. On any given day, you might win, you might lose, there's no assurances. The worst team in baseball will still win 1/3 of the time and the best team in baseball will lose 1/3 of the time. The argument in baseball, is over that middle third and democracy is a lot like that as well" -- George Will

Sometimes the most unlikey things happen at a baseball park. Sometimes, giants are slain and David is left holding the slingshot, victorious.
Lou Gehrig
Lou Gehrig had a terrible day in his celestial debut, going 0-3 with three strike outs, only managing to draw a 2 out walk.

Today, at Yankee Stadium, during the Yankees' celestial debut, a team that featured Mickey Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Babe Ruth and Whitey Ford all on the same team, the unthinkable happened: the team lost to a team from Canada, the lowly Toronto Blue Jays.

In truth, the Blue Jays team was no slouch team, it featured Roberto Alomar in his prime, John Olerud the year he hit 360 and won the batting title, and players like Carlos Delgado and Joe Carter in their primes. It also featured a player, Yankee fans are most familiar with: Roger Clemens.

In honor of Clemens' Cy Young year in Toronto, a year he posted the best statistics of his career, he agreed to suit up for the Blue Jays and face the mighty Yankee bats.

While Clemens gave up, three homeruns, including one to Babe Ruth, they were all solo shots and Roger held on just enough to allow Toronto to eek out a 5-4 win.

"Toronto? Dumbest looking team, I've ever seen," said a gregarious Ruth, who seemed more amused by the loss than heartbroken. "Those uniforms look like a girl's softball team," and then roared with laughter.

Then Ruth paused, noticing the dismay of the Canadian reporters and added: "Actually, Toronto's a good town, I hit my first professional homerun there and then tore into a tavern on Spadina Ave until 3 AM."

"Now if you'll excuse me, I hear there are these things called Ferrari's now, that I simply have to try…" and with that Babe stormed out of the locker room and into the New York nightlife.
