Hack Wilson Smashes Reds

Chicago Cubs: 13
Cincinnati Reds: 10

WP: Fergie Jenkins
LP: Wil McEnaney
Date Played: 3/3/2005

Hack Wilson gets 5 RBI's, Rose nearly hits for cycle and Felix Heredia makes a strange appearance as the Cubs advance to the second round.
Hack Wilson
Hack Wilson's career ended in tragic alcoholism, but in his prime, Hack Wilson was one of the greatest bats the National League had ever seen.

MVP: Hack Wilson

Hack Wilson's 1930 season still inspires awe — 191 RBI (the all-time major league record), 56 home runs (a National League record for 68 years) and a .356 batting average.

He proved today in League Five Are, that those numbers were no aberration as he compiled one of the greatest games in League Five Are history, going 3 for 3, with two walks and bringing in 5 runs in a single game.

In a game where the wind was gusting out of Wrigley, the Cubs defeated the Reds, 13-10 and advanced to the second round. Other game notes:

  • Pete Rose was one single away from the cycle in this game. He had compiled a homerun, triple and a double and in the 8th inning was poised to grasp the first 'hit for the cycle' in Raible history, when he choked on a fat fastball, sending it weakly to Ernie Banks for the third out.

  • Hank Aaron and Satchel Paige were in the press box watching this game.

  • Felix Heredia pitched for the Reds in 5th and 6th inning for Cincinnati, sneaked into the Cubs dugout, put on a different uniform and then pithced for 1/3 of an inning in the bottom of the 6th for the Chicago Cubs.

  • For reasons unknown, Spark Anderson lifted Johnny Bench from the lineup in the 8th inning, a move that angered Bench so much, he stormed out of the dugout and locker room. His replacements failed to get a hit for the rest of the game. The catalyst for this strange move is rumored to have something to do with royalty checks regarding their cameo on the old WKRP situation comedy, back in the late 70's.
