Celestial Wear and Tear, Too Much for Jenkins

Oakland/Philadelphia Athletics: 8
Texas Rangers: 7

WP: Rollie Fingers
LP: Fergie Jenkins
Date Played: 6/6/2005

Fergie Jenkins Celestial
Fergie Jenkins let his spirit travel from the Cubs to the Rangers in one night. The wear and tear took its toll and Jenkins gave up 8 runs in 6 innings of work.
Fergie Jenkins gets lit up in his debut for the Rangers franchise and Rickey Henderson goes 4 for 5, as the Athletics beat the Rangers 8-7.

MVP: Rickey Henderson

Sometimes, old legends try to do too much.

The allure of Celestial League play is great. Your spirit revisits the body and mind of years past and you can journey to any point in your career and pitch or hit as that entity.

Fergie Jenkins saw the celestial travels of Roger Clemens last week and was amazed. Clemens traveled to Toronto where he pitched as a Blue Jay from 1997, then assumed the form of himself in 2004 and pitched for the Astros, the very next day. He lost both games and the journey clearly seemed to wear on him.

Fergie wanted to be the second pitcher to try the same stunt. After clinching the NL Title for the Cubs, pitching in the form of his 20 win season in 1968, Fergie then celestially travelled to 1974 to pitch as a Texas Ranger. In fact, in 1974, Fergie Jenkins pitched one of the greatest seasons as a starter in Ranger history.

The journey proved too much for him though and facing a nasty Athletics lineup that featured the best from Connie Mack's lineup from the 30's and the best from Larussa's Athletics of the late 80's, the A's crushed Fergie for 8 runs in just 7 innings of work.

WP Kinsella, author and baseball officanado was on hand for this game and tried to explain, "There are limits to what one can do to your spirit and your baseball skills, even in this weird celestial place. It may be 'Field of Dreams' out here, but even in the Field of Dreams, you can't pitch back to back games and expect to succeed."

The Rangers must move to round 2 of the losing bracket and face the California Angels. The Athletics meanwhile have secured a place in the Season 4 winning bracket.
