Johan Santana's performance today was more than admirable when you consider just how tough the the Mariner batting lineup was. |
Timely hitting by Bobby Kielty and Rod Carew lifted the Twins to a 5-3 victory over the Mariners at Safeco Field.
MVP: Bobby Kielty
When you hold a lineup featuring Alex Rodriguez, Ichiro, Ken Griffey Jr and Edgar Martinez (all in their primes), you are doing something right.
Johan Santana, Latroy Hawkins and Joe Nathan held the greatest Mariner lineup ever assembled to just 5 hits and 3 runs today at Safeco Field.
Meanwhile, Jamie Moyer allowed a homerun to Bobby Kielty and gave up two runs in the 7th, including an RBI single by Rod Carew. It was a gritty performance, but it was not enough for Moyer to avoid the loss.
"My boys will be back," predicted Lou Piniella defiantly. "One of the greatest teams I ever saw were my 2001 Mariners and this celestial team is full of those guys, plus a few more from the '95 team. We will make some noise in this league, I guarantee you that."
The Mariners must advance to the second round of the losing bracket and will face the Detroit Tigers in round 2.
